A number of organizations are coming together to produce a weeklong series of events and programming to commemorate the 1967 Newark rebellion and unrest, and to unpack its causes and immediate and longterm affects.
We already reported on the launch of the Newark Library’s new exhibit, Voices from the Rebellion, which a collaboration with Center for Education and Juvenile Justice, and will be on view at Newark Public Library through August 26th. A symposium will be held in conjunction with the exhibit on Saturday, July 15th, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.
This Tuesday, July 11th from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Newark Interfaith Alliance and Abbott Leadership Institute will host an inaugural prayer and memorial service at Abyssinian Baptist Church (224 West Kinney Street).
On Wednesday, July 12th at 4:30 p.m., 50 years to the day after the unrest began, People’s Organization for Progress will meet at the intersection of Springfield Avenue and Hayes Street to mount a “50th Anniversary March to the Monument.”
WBGO’s Newark Today program will then host a public forum about the Newark rebellion, entitled “Summer of ’67 Forum,” at Express Newark in the Hahne’s building (54 Halsey Street, Room 213) on Thursday, July 13th.
And on Friday, July 14th at 6:30 p.m., the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice (NJISJ) will host “They Didn’t Know We Were Seeds: An Intergenerational Conversation about the Newark Rebellion,” at the Newark Historical Society (52 Park Place). The forum will feature People’s Organization for Progress founder Lawrence Hamm; Newark City Council President Mildred Crump; Dr. Linda McDonald Carter, director of the Paralegal Studies program at Essex County College; She Wins, Inc. founder A’Dorian Murray Thomas; former West Ward city council candidate Rashawn Davis; and NJISJ Associate Legal Council Andrea McChristian.
Those who participate in any of the events throughout the week are encouraged to share their thoughts and impressions using hashtag #newarkrebellion1967.
