Never underestimate Lyte the MC.
Pioneering rapper MC Lyte released her debut album Lyte As A Rock at just shy of 18 years old, becoming the first solo woman rapper to do so. She’s lent her distinctive voice to an array of campaigns and award shows, headlined speaking engagements across the globe, launched a foundation and racked up honors along the way–including two lifetime achievement awards. This summer she even guest starred in the USA Network show Queen of the South.
Now MC Lyte has launched a lipgloss line with cosmetics company LipSynk cosmetics, which itself debuted in 2014. She’ll be showing if off in Newark this weekend at Off the Hanger and ANE, the locally-owned downtown boutique located at 12 Linden Street between Halsey and Washington streets.
“I’ve always wanted to present my fans with something spectacular in the realm of beauty,” Lyte said of the collection when it launched last month. She’ll come face to face with some of those fans when she appears at the event in person. People who purchase a Lyte Collection item ahead of time or at the door will be guaranteed entry to the event (those who purchase online will need to be ready to show proof). The sip-and-shop event will feature complimentary champagne and cupcakes, and Lyte will also be signing copies of her latest book, Your Man and Your Money.
Off The Hanger features women’s and men’s apparel and accessories (including proprietary designs) plus home decor. The shop is no stranger to events, especially of the sip-and-shop variety. Co-owner Lynette Lashawn curated and styled a high-fashion exhibit at the location for Newark’s Open Doors Citywide Arts Festival earlier this month.
MC Lyte’s sip-and-shop takes place this Saturday, October 28th from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Free registration is available online. According to a press release about the line, a portion of the proceeds from The Lyte Collection will go to her non-profit organization Hip Hop Sisters Foundation.
Off The Hanger is located at 12 Linden Street, Downtown Newark. MC Lyte’s Sip and Shop featuring The Lyte Collection takes place Saturday, October 28th from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
