CELEBRATE HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH AT FESTIVAL DE LA FAMILIA THIS WEEKEND

The 10th Annual Festival de la Familia will unfold in Newark this Saturday, September 23rd.
This Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, produced by La Casa de Don Pedro in partnership with the City of Newark, will also commemorate La Casa’s 45th Anniversary. The free festival will take place from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Broadway between Bloomfield Place & Broad Street.
The festival will open with street performances by Crespita Entertainment, with DJ Cisco-Francisco Morales/FM Entertainment will providing the soundtrack to the show. Musicians and artists will showcase music and dance from countries including Peru, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Colombia as well as from across the African contintent. These include Yahaye Kamate Drummers, Ruben Figueroa and Conjunto Ritmo Tropical, Cimarrones, Alianza Latina, Peruvian Dance troupe, and Flor de Café.
Newark’s very own Batman (retired Detective Ortiz) and Batgirl will make a special appearance as well.
The street itself will be lined with carnival games, street performers and many other activities, and local organizations including Newark Museum, Focus Hispanic Center for Community Development, The Newark Public Library, New Jersey Citizen Action, and others will share activities and resources. La Casa will also provide free HIV testing.
Attendees can also see renowned muralist Layqa Nuna Yawar painting his latest mural right along the festival corridor.
