Fresh Market Saturdays have kicked off in Newark’s North Ward
by Vince Baglivo | June 26, 2017
“Fresh Market Saturdays” have come to Mt. Prospect Avenue.
This summer, the Mt. Prospect Partnership is partnering with Greater Newark Conservancy to deliver fresh, affordable, nutritious produce to the residents of the North Ward on the fourth Saturday of every month from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the corner of Mt. Prospect Avenue and Heller Parkway. The first took place Saturday, June 24. The Youth Farm Stand will accept many forms of payment including cash, credit and debit cards and checks made out to Greater Newark Conservancy.
From kale and collards to tomatoes, strawberries and more, Greater Newark Conservancy’s Youth Farm Stands are the city’s source for “Newark Fresh” produce grown in-season on the Conservancy’s Court Street and Hawthorne Avenue urban farms. Now open and running until the harvest season ends in November, the farm stands are an option for locally grown produce for people who live, learn and work in Newark, and provide opportunities for the city’s youth.
The Farm Stand program is run by student interns from the Conservancy’s Newark Youth Leadership Project (NYLP), a year-round job training and leadership development program for Newark high school students. NYLP interns manage the Farm Stand program under the direction of the Conservancy’s professional staff.
