The enrollment period for Affordable Care Act health coverage for 2017 started on November 1st and runs though January 31st. While those interested in enrolling can do so independently on, people who need help understanding their options and applying for coverage can receive in-person help during one of four upcoming events sponsored by the office of Congressman Donald M. Payne Jr.

The events, which will be held in Newark at the LeRoy F. Smith, Jr. Public Safety Building (60 Nelson Place, 14th Floor), will enable attendees to meet with healthcare navigators, who are trained to help consumers make sense of the ACA’s healthcare marketplace and complete required eligibility and enrollment forms.

Residents are asked to call Congressman Payne, Jr.’s Newark office at 973-645-3213 to register for one of the events, though walk-ins are also welcome. While general open enrollment for 2017 coverage ends on January 31st, individuals can qualify for later enrollment in the wake of designated life events, including marriage, childbirth and losing other health coverage.

Based on income and other variables, individuals may be eligible for tax credits that reduce their monthly health insurance premiums.

The event dates are as follows:

  • Wednesday, December 14, 2016; 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Those who apply by December 15th can receive health coverage starting January 1)
  • Wednesday, January 4, 2017; 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM
  • Wednesday, January 11, 2017; 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM
  • Wednesday, January 25, 2017; 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM
