Three Newark students among Congressional Art Competition winners
by Brick City Live | May 16, 2017
The winners of the 2016 Congressional Art Competition for New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District have been announced, and three Newark students are among the winners of the 36-year-old competition.
Newark students Rachel Lantigua won for best digital image, Jazmine Vera for best photograph, and Fatou Ridgird won for best painting. All three winners are students at Newark Arts High School.
In total, 34 students from 11 schools in the 10th Congressional District participated in the competition.
The overall winner for the contest is Jennifer Martinez (pictured above with Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr.), a student at Jersey City Arts High School. Her winning artwork, a drawing titled “Confidence of Fears,” will be displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol for members of Congress, staff, and visitors to enjoy. In June, Jennifer will have the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. to participate in a national ceremony with other winners from around the country. Four other local students–two from Jersey City, one from Orange, and one from East Orange–won awards in the competition’s various subcategories.
The winning students were recognized at an awards reception at Newark Museum. Each received a medal and certificate.
