Khalil Nass is Chief of Staff to Newark Central Ward Councilwoman Gayle Chaneyfield-Jenkins, and a 14-month-and-counting downtown resident (he formerly lived in Newark’s Forest Hill neighborhood).
Nass, a political insider known for dressing to the nines, is the ultimate live/work/play downtown resident. His beautifully furnished apartment at Packard Lofts on the southern half of Broad Street is a mere five-minute walk from his job at Newark City Hall, and is also central to the loads of openings, ribbon cuttings and other events that are a frequent feature of his packed schedule.
On nights and weekends, you’re bound to catch Nass around the neighborhood, especially if you happen into Skylab, Taste Venue, 27 Mix and other hangouts. He also has a penchant for enjoying the area’s larger cultural institutions: attending a wedding at Newark Symphony Hall, or reliving his younger days with 19 of his best friends in a suite at Prudential Center for the Bad Boy Reunion Tour.
My place at Packard Lofts is my favorite in all of downtown, but if I were you I’d definitely tour Hahne & Co. The developers did an incredible job on the entire building; there are a few different unit configurations. I recommend the one bedroom duplex unit. Whole Foods on the ground floor is an added plus.
10:45 – 11 a.m.: Military Park
Broad & New Streets
Spend a few moments across the street from Hahne & Co. at Military Park. The park is beautiful. Why not go for a ride on the carousel while there?
11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.: Newark Print Shop
54 Halsey Street
How cool would it be to make a custom shirt at the Newark Print Shop? Make sure you include “Newark” somewhere on your shirt.
Noon – 1:45 p.m.: Burger Walla
47 Halsey Street
There’s a lamb burger at Burger Walla that is incredible. You’ve got to go there. Owner/Culinary Curator Kai Campbell always delivers super creative choices.
1:45 – 2:30 p.m.: Sip and Shop @ Newark Shoppes
744 Broad Street
A great way to browse and buy from local artisans and creators.
2:30 – 4 p.m.: Aljira: A Center for Contemporary Art
591 Broad Street
What better way to finish here in Downtown Newark than checking out the art at Aljira: A Center for Contemporary Art? There’s a new Director, Dexter Wimberly, in place.
Choose your own adventure during the free Downtown Newark Living Tour, which is offering tours of a dozen residential buildings, free entry at seven museums and art spaces, seven free events and performances throughout the neighborhood, two special shopping opportunities, and discounts and specials at five local bars and restaurants.
