The City of Newark beat out Camden, New Brunswick and Jersey City to win the state’s backing in its bid to become the location of Amazon’s next headquarters.
Newark possesses many of the attributes Amazon said it is looking for in its request for proposals, including access to an international airport, mass transit and highways; location in a metropolitan area of at least 1 million people; a sizable student population; superfast internet connectivity and available space to build out the company’s campus, which will require up to 500,000 square feet of space in 2019 and up to 8 million square feet by 2027.
Amazon is also looking for tax incentives, which the state and city will put on the table. Governor Chris Christie’s proposal calls for $7 billion in tax incentives over 10 years: $5 billion from the state, a $1 billion city tax abatement and a $1 billion wage tax waiver for employees.
Amazon will announce the winning bid in 2018, and the built-out is expected to commence in 2019.
Amazon says the new headquarters will bring up to 50,000 high-paying jobs to town over 15 years, and cited a multiplier effect on Seattle’s local economy that they argue would be replicated in their second North American headquarters.
Mayor Ras Baraka made a forceful case for Newark: “We have exactly what Amazon is looking for, in terms of expanding their company in a city that will help them grow and where it would have a real social impact,” he said, flanked by Christie and Senator Cory Booker at an event to announce that the state had gotten behind Newark’s bid. The proposal due date is October 19th, and Amazon will announce the winning bid in 2018.
