Newark entrepreneurs spotlighted on ‘Leaders Create Leaders’ podcast

The ingenuity and drive of some of Newark’s most innovative business owners are being highlighted through the Leaders Create Leaders podcast series, presented by Prudential.
The series, hosted by serial entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist Gerard Adams, was recorded live at The GRAMMY Museum Experience located inside the Prudential Center. Each episode focuses on an inspirational, transformative figure who offers insight and inspiration, along with detailing trials and tribulations faced as they sought to achieve their entrepreneurial goals.
The current episode, the third in the series, features BrickCityLive.com creator and editor-in-chief, Andaiye Taylor. Taylor, a recipient of the Lars-Erik Nelson Prize for excellence in reporting and writing, built BrickCityLive.com from the ground up, and in her interview, explained what led her to pursue journalism, what inspired the creation of BCL, and how she was able increase readership and revenue at the thriving online news and lifestyle destination all while maintaining a full-time corporate job.
Taylor’s was the third interview released so far in the series. In the previous episode, Adams spoke with Brittany Jade, another Newark entrepreneur who has made her mark with the creation of Newark.fm, a streaming radio platform which broadcasts several music and talk shows over the internet. The series kicked off with an interview with Yahya Bakkar, a largely self-taught, highly successful motivational speaker and public speaking coach who has delivered talks on more than 500 stages. Bakkar told his own inspiring story, detailing how dropping out of college and being kicked out of his parents’ home were catalysts to finding his own successful, entrepreneurial path.
These stories all align with the stated goal of the Leaders Create Leaders podcast, which is to “peel back the curtain on how some of the world’s most influential people set themselves up for success,” to pass that information on to the next round of budding entrepreneurs.
Adams, who made his name, and fortune from elitedaily.com, which he co-founded, when it sold to Daily Mail in 2015 for a reported $50 million. In addition to launching Newark-based entrepreneurial education initiative Fownders, he has achieved continuing success as a consultant, motivational speaker and mentor. It in that spirit that he created the podcast, an offshoot of a similar video series he maintained for several years.
“Leaders Create Leaders is an ethos,” he explained. “It’s a movement for those ready to step into their greatness, tap into their leader within and lead by example to make this world a better place. Leaders don’t create followers, they create more leaders.”
Throughout the podcast episodes, strong focus is placed on business acumen and sharing of entrepreneurial tips, tricks and war stories, but Adams and his guests also delve into the issue of self-care, emphasizing the importance of maintaining good physical and mental health while coping with the demands of an active entrepreneurial life.
The series, presented in association with Newark-based media production house ABF Creative, will top out at eight episodes, each highlighting a nationally-renowned figure or another of Newark’s brightest business owners, who are ensuring that their city’s improving perception is not only attributed to an influx of major corporate influence, but the gritty, innovative spirit of its entrepreneurial leaders.
