The inaugural Newark Cocktail Challenge will be formally announced on November 16 at 1 p.m. at the Greater Newark Convention and Visitors Bureau. The competition has been open to area bars and restaurants since October 1st, and a public voting period to determine finalists will take place from November 19th to January 1st, 2019. The champion concoction will be awarded in March, 2019.
“This competition is actually more of a celebration of the innovation and ingenuity that is still found in the City of Newark,” said GNCVB President Karin Aaron. “What better way for our restaurants, hotels, and bars, to entertain their clients over the upcoming holidays than with a cocktail tasting? We expect visitors to linger at these establishments a bit longer and to sample the good spirits that are produced in our City.”
For entries to be eligible, they are required to include spirits from the All Points West Distillery, located in Newark’s Ironbound section. Small batch offerings from the craft distillery include such spirits as Malt and Grain Pot Still Whiskey, Cathouse Gin and Bone Black Vodka.
The contest is partially sponsored by the Ironbound Business Improvement District.
Once the public voting has ended, a team of celebrity judges will make the final call from among the top five finalists, with the winning libation earning the title of Newark’s Signature Cocktail 2018.
Competing bars and restaurants will be sharing their entries using the #DrinkNewark hashtag on social media. The general public can join in as well, as two random posts will be selected to receive a locally sourced spirits and cigars gift basket.
