Say goodbye to McGovern’s Tavern (as you know it) this summer

The walls are bare. The sports jerseys and helmets commemorating firemen, policemen, military and construction workers no longer hang from the ceiling. Times are definitely changing on New Street. On Friday June 15th, a transformation will begin at a historic Downtown Newark fixture. McGovern’s Tavern will be shutting down for the first time in 82 years.
With the groundbreaking of the Rutgers Newark Honors Living-Learning Community around the corner came an opportunity for the longtime bar to expand and evolve. The current plans will see the bar and restaurant expand to encompass the two adjoined buildings on New Street. With plans for a larger kitchen and an additional dining room, the renovation will allow more people to experience McGovern’s Tavern for themselves.

But the changes don’t end there. An additional two floors will be added to the current McGovern’s building and one floor to the building adjacent to it, resulting in three adjoined buildings each three stories high. Those second and third floors will feature six brand new apartments and a law firm.
Your last chance to see the McGovern’s many locals know and love will be this Friday June 15th during their closing party. The celebration starts at 2:00 p.m. and will feature drink specials, giveaways and music by The Captain and O’Neill.

Once McGovern’s is closed, patrons will still be able to get their favorite food items from the McGovern’s food truck that will be open for breakfast and lunch at the corner of New and Washington Streets. Unfortunately, beer lovers won’t be able to get a pint of Guinness with their lunch from the truck. For that you’ll have to wait until they reopen the newly renovated bar in late August.
