Newark will soon kick off a celebration of its fashion scene—and the established and emerging designers that make it go.
The inaugural Newark Fashion Forward will present a series of events meant to celebrate the sartorial. It kicks off with Fashion on the Green: Botanica, which will take place at Military Park on Friday, September 7th at 7 pm. The event will be hosted by Essence Magazine Fashion and Beauty Director, Julee Wilson, and will include a fashion show featuring designers from in- and outside of Newark, plus music by DJ Quiana Parks, live performances and an awards ceremony honoring Essence Magazine Editor-At-Large Mikki Taylor and style influencer Tai Beachamp.

The weekend will continue on Saturday with the free event Fashion on the Green: Art x Fashion Exhibition, which will pair designers with visual artists to “create an immersive experience” that looks to merge the best of both worlds. DJ Sienna Chanel will provide the sonic backdrop for the event.
On Sunday, September 9th, the weekend will close with the sold out screening of The Gospel According to Andre at Newark Museum. The documentary chronicles the life and work of Andre Leon Talley, the inimitable former editor-at-large of Vogue Magazine.
The festival was conceived, according to organizers, to showcase the city’s fashion talent, and to highlight the possibilities the city’s burgeoning fashion scene provide economic development, tourism and culture.
