Newark HS students begin taking credited classes at Rutgers-Newark

Published February 11, 2019 | Manny Faces

A newly-launched dual-enrollment initiative between Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences–Newark (SASN) and Newark Public Schools (NPS) begins this semester, offering nearly 40 high school students the opportunity to receive college credit for select courses.

Newark’s Board of Education approved the agreement in December 2018, as part of an increased focus on preparing the city’s high school students for college.

“The opportunity for our high school students to realize now that college is possible is embodied in dual enrollment,” said Superintendent Roger León. “This experience is beyond realizing that our students can complete college courses [but that they can] compete at the very highest levels.”

Rennie Harris and his exhilarating Puremovement dance company – pioneers in a new genre of hip-hop/street dance – bring their latest, evening-length work, set to house and gospel music. Harris\’ Lifted features a live choir in addition to the stunning dancers of Puremovement. This highly theatrical, narrative work merges the spiritual vocals of gospel with the powerful rhythms of house music and dance to explore contemporary issues of morality and spirituality. Lifted follows the experiences of a troubled young black man (loosely inspired by Charles Dickens\’ Oliver Twist), who is ultimately surrounded and supported by his church and community. “Rennie Harris is the most respected and, to my knowledge, the most brilliant hip-hop choreographer in America,” says The New Yorker. “He\’s the Basquiat of the U.S. contemporary dance scene,” says The London Times. “Harris literally embodies the history of hip-hop dance.”

Beginning this semester, students will take their classes on the Rutgers University-Newark campus, rather than in their high schools or online, providing added collegiate-level experience. Yellybeth Diaz, a student at Barringer High School who is taking an Introduction to Psychology course, said “Taking this class will give me a first-hand experience of what college life will be like…[and] will teach me how to be even more responsible academically and most importantly how to manage my time.”
