DOWNTOWN NEWARK WILL PILOT CITY’S RAIN BARREL PROGRAM
September 11, 2017 | Brick City Live
Newark Downtown District is currently running a pilot program to distribute rain barrels to interested property owners, and renters with owners’ permission, within the boundaries of downtown Newark.
Zoom for more detail. Note: The boundaries extend east of Newark Penn Station.
Rain barrels can confer a number of benefits, from environmental benefits like stopping runoff pollution in its tracks, to more personal benefits like protecting a home’s foundation, providing a better hydration alternative for gardening and reducing home water bills.
NDD will deliver and install the rain barrels to each property that signs up on rolling basis starting this month. As part of the installation, NDD will also demonstrate to recipients how to maintain and winterize the rain barrels. Barrels will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis and are limited in quantity for the pilot program, but NDD said they may increase availability based on demand.
The downtown pilot precedes a citywide rain barrel program that will begin in 2018. The city’s Office of Sustainability received a grant from the Michael Bloomberg-founded non-profit Cities of Service that will fund the wider rain barrel distribution program.
Downtown owners and renters who are interested in participating in the pilot should email Matthew Pietrus at matthew(at)downtownewark.com with their name and property address.
