Following the passing of former New Community Corporation founder and Board President Monsignor William J. Linder in June, the community development organization’s board has unanimously voted Dr. A. Zachary Yamba to the position.
Yamba was president of Essex County College for thirty years starting in 1980, when he saved the school from losing its accreditation soon after ascending from Dean of Faculty to the university president position. He was reinstated to the position in an interim capacity in 2016 in the wake of then-president Dr. Gale Gibson’s suspension following an investigation into the school’s finances.

Yamba and Linder had known each other for 55 years, according to a news release from New Community, and Yamba has been a member of the organization’s Board of Directors since September of 2012.
New Community Corporation, one of the oldest organizations of its kind in the country, offers community-based services including an accredited workforce development program, health and social services, housing, youth and senior services and scholarship programs. The organization is helmed by chief executive Richard Rohrman.
