NHL sets up shop at Championship Plaza for free fan experience to celebrate league centennial this weekend
by Andaiye Taylor/March 25, 2017
The National Hockey League has taken the celebration of their 100th anniversary on the road, and this weekend, they’re making their first stop in the tri-state, and fifteenth overall, when the mobile fan arena rolls through Prudential Center’s Championship Plaza.
The centerpiece of the fan experience is a mobile NHL museum housed in a tricked-out trailer parked near Edison Place. The 1,000 square foot space features an NHL timeline wrapped around the top of the trailer’s interior; NHL artifacts, including hockey sticks and goalie face masks through the years; and interactive exhibits that enable visitors to explore the history of hockey and profiles of some of its prominent players.
For this stop, there are also custom exhibits that pay homage to the Devils, including a replica locker room where visitors can pose with a custom namecard above the middle slot. Fans can also sign a real live Devils fan wall, which will later be displayed within the arena.
In addition to the trailer itself, the rest of the plaza is dotted with other fan experiences. A second trailer will feature highlight videos alongside a popout stage for special appearances. Visitors can compete to perfectly resurface virtual hockey rink ice at the virtual reality ice Zamboni experience. A hockey rink has been setup for exhibition games and visitor participation, and sausages, soft drinks and beers will be on sale.
Visitors will also have photo opportunities with former Devils players Bruce Driver, Grant Marshall, Bryce Salvador and Colin White, and can take a picture with a Stanley Cup.
The tour started in Toronto and will stop at each NHL market through the NHL Winter Classic. The NHL Centennial Fan Arena Tour is the first of its kind for any professional sports league.
The experience will be open Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. for Devils season ticketholders, and from 3 to 5 p.m. for the general public.
If Sunday’s rain forecast bears out, elements of the NHL Centennial experience will be moved indoors.
