#OccupytheCity: Voices from the rally

Thousands of Newarkers turned out for yesterday’s #OccupytheCity anti-violence rally. The event, which featured remarks from city officials, Mayor Ras Baraka, actor and Newark native John Amos, and Chicago rapper Common, was a citywide expansion of the much more frequent Occupy the Block events that take place at trouble spots all around the city.

We spoke with about two dozen rally participants, including activists, victims’ families, city officials and Newark residents about why the rally is important. Here’s what they said. To see extended interviews, click each of the video clips below.
