How have blocks, buildings, business and public spaces transformed over the past few years in Downtown Newark? Slide each image back-and-forth to see for yourself.
These Halsey Street neighbors–one a unisex salon and the other a lauded burger joint, are part of a crop of new places that have come to the north end of Halsey Street in recent years. While there are more net new places on Halsey, locals also miss favorites like Coffee Cave and Art Kitchen.
Whole Foods Market opened in a renovated Hahne’s building on March 1st of this year. In the photo above, captured in November 2016, both Whole Foods and the Hahne’s building itself were well on their way to completion.
Hotel Indigo debuted at the corner of Broad Street and Edison Place, also in 2014. The boutique hotel features Alva Tavern on the ground floor and Skylab, a rooftop bar with views of Newark and Manhattan.
Panasonic added another gleaming glass tower to the intersection of Raymond Boulevard and McCarter Highway (Route 21) when it opened its new North American headquarters in Newark in 2013.
