The preliminary games for Shaquille O’Neal’s “Believe in Newark 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament” kick off this weekend to determine which teams will head to the championship finals later this month.
Preliminary games to determine the championship teams will begin on August 15 at 12 p.m. at the JFK Recreation Center in Newark. Round two will be held at the same time and place on August 16. Registration is closed, but the games are free to attend.
Two teams apiece of high school girls and boys will compete in separate final tournament games at the event on August 22. The event will be co-hosted by Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka and basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal.
The games will be played simultaneously on Broad Street in front of Newark City Hall at 12 p.m., with pre-game festivities beginning at 11 a.m.
The “Believe in Newark” tournament is just one of the Newark initiatives O’Neal is involved in. The former NBA player has dedicated himself over the past few years to improving New Jersey’s urban centers, especially his hometown of Newark.
In 2012, O’Neal opened Cineplex 12, Newark’s only major movie theater. O’Neal is also collaborating with Boraie Development on constructing One Riverview, the first new high-rise apartment building in downtown Newark in over 50 years.
